Valkyria Chronicles takes place on Europa, a fictional continent that recalls 1930s Europe. The eastern Empire and the western Federation of democracies are locked in war over ragnite, a resource used for both weapons and medicine. When the Empire invades the neutral principality of Gallia to seize its rich ragnite deposits, the border town of Bruhl falls under attack. Welkin Gunther, son of the late war hero General Belgen Gunther, fights to survive alongside Alicia Melchiott of the town watch and his adoptive Darcsen sister Isara. The three escape to the Gallian capital and join the militia as part of the newly formed Squad 7. Welkin commands the Edelweiss tank, Isara pilots it, and Alicia serves as a scout. Though inexperienced in war, the squad and its mix of colorful members must defend Gallia against a far stronger invader.
