The Pillars, enormous entities that suddenly appeared on Earth, threaten all life and push humanity to the edge of defeat. A being calling himself the god Odin steps in and offers a counterattack, granting humanity the Valkyries, young battle maidens who fly vintage-style aircraft known as Hero Wings or herocraft. Years later the war still rages in the skies, with the Valkyries fighting while men serve as their support staff. In Japan, three skilled but troublesome Valkyries face a giant Pillar looming over Mt. Fuji, based at the Tateyama Valkyrie Wing. An ace pilot with a troubled history, Claudia "Schwertleite" Bruford of the European Valkyrie Wing, is transferred in to join them. Burdened by the grim nickname "Grim Reaper", she expects to be shunned, while the oddball comrades ahead show no interest in treating her that way.
