Set in Disboard six thousand years before the era of Sora and Shiro, No Game, No Life Zero depicts a world torn apart by a great war. The Exceed, sixteen sentient species, battle to decide which of the Old Deus will become the One True God, and the conflict is so destructive that it splits the skies and shatters stars. Humanity, with no magic and fragile bodies, is an easy target for the other races and stands close to extinction. Riku, an angry young warrior, leads the surviving humans toward the future he believes in. In the ruins of an abandoned Elf city he encounters Schwi, a female Ex-Machina android cast out of her Cluster for studying human emotions. Schwi is convinced that these feelings are why humanity has endured, and she asks Riku to teach her what it means to have a human heart.
