Madoka Kaname, a 14-year-old middle school student, lives an ordinary life until she encounters a mysterious cat-like creature named Kyubey. Kyubey offers Madoka and her best friend, Sayaka Miki, the chance to become magical girls, granting them any single wish in exchange for fighting abstract beings called 'witches' that spread despair. However, a new transfer student named Homura Akemi, who appears in Madoka's dreams, warns them against accepting the offer, suggesting that there is more to being a magical girl than meets the eye.
