Claudia March, a governess from London, accepts a position in a small town in Brazil to care for Rebecca, the daughter of mining engineer Saul Treharne. Claudia anticipates a peaceful change of pace and looks forward to teaching Rebecca. However, she quickly discovers that the main challenge lies not with her charge, but with Rebecca's father, Saul. Saul is described as difficult and sarcastic, and his relationship with Rebecca has been strained since the death of his wife.
