Set during China's Warring States period, when centuries of warfare have left seven powerful states vying for dominance, Kingdom begins in the western state of Qin. Xin (Shin) and Piao (Hyou) are war orphans living as slaves in a village household. Despite their lowly status, the two friends train relentlessly together, sharing the dream of one day earning glory in battle and becoming Great Generals of the Heavens. Their paths split when Piao, the calmer and more thoughtful of the pair, catches the eye of the minister Changwenjun (Shou Bunkun) and is taken to serve in the royal palace, while the hot-headed Xin keeps training alone. When a violent power struggle erupts at court, Xin is drawn into it and meets Ying Zheng (Ei Sei), the young King of Qin, a boy who looks almost exactly like Piao and who is destined to become the emperor Shi Huangdi.
