In 1939, the imperialist nation of Germania invades a neighboring country, and the conflict quickly spreads across an alternate-history Europe. By 1940 its attention turns to Eylstadt, a small, green Alpine principality with little military strength or natural resources. Princess Finé, the only daughter of the ailing ruler Rudolph III, must take charge of the country's defense in his place. Izetta, the last surviving member of a clan of witches who can magically manipulate objects they touch, has spent her life hiding her powers. When she and Finé are brought together, Izetta pledges to fight for the princess and her homeland, and Eylstadt hopes this secret weapon can offset Germania's overwhelming forces.
