Long ago, a mad magician dragged the Golden Kingdom underground, and its king resurfaced only long enough to promise his treasure to whoever defeated the sorcerer before turning to dust. Since then, guilds of adventurers have pushed into the sprawling dungeon below a small village's graveyard in search of that prize. Laios Touden leads one such party until a dragon overwhelms it deep below and swallows his younger sister, Falin. The survivors escape, but they leave behind their gear, their money and their supplies. Laios has little time to rescue Falin before she is digested. He heads back down with the elven healer Marcille Donato and the halfling thief Chilchuck Tims. With no food or coin, he proposes something considered taboo: living off the monsters they defeat.
