Beneath the earth lies a civilization built inside an endless maze of dark, cramped tunnels and shafts, where people wear protective suits and lead modest, difficult, yet contented lives. Patema, the spirited young princess of this underground community, spends her days exploring the passages, driven by curiosity about the unexplored depths of her world and inspired by a friend who mysteriously disappeared. Her favorite haunt is the "danger zone," an area the community's rules forbid anyone to enter. Her caretaker Jii frequently scolds her for these excursions, all the more so because of her royal status, but no one has ever told her what the danger actually is, and her desire to understand the reason behind the prohibition keeps pulling her back. On one of her usual trips there, unexpected events bring her close to a hidden secret.
