During Japan's Warring States period, the ambitious samurai lord Daigo Kagemitsu makes a pact with 12 (or 48) demons, offering his unborn son's body parts in exchange for prosperity for his lands. The child is born severely malformed, lacking many body parts, and is abandoned in a river. However, he is rescued by a medicine man or sage who raises him and equips him with artificial limbs and weapons. This boy, named Hyakkimaru, discovers that each time he defeats a demon, he regains one of his missing body parts. He roams the war-torn countryside, seeking out demons, until he encounters Dororo, a young orphan thief. The two unlikely companions then journey together.
