Hitomi Kanzaki is a 15-year-old high school girl who enjoys tarot cards and fortune telling and has a knack for premonitions. During a school track run, a pillar of light drops a young swordsman, Van Fanel, onto her world, pursued by a dragon. When the light returns, it carries Hitomi and Van to Gaea, a mysterious planet where Earth and its moon hang in the sky and Earth is known as the Mystic Moon. Van is a prince of the Kingdom of Fanelia, and Hitomi's latent psychic abilities grow stronger in this world. She soon becomes caught up in the conflict between the Zaibach Empire and the neighbouring countries. Van pilots the ancient guymelef Escaflowne, a giant mechanized suit of armour tied to his family.
