In the year 2020 of a new calendar, grotesque creatures known as the Others descend from the sky and feed on human brains. Many people have psionic abilities, and a psionic hormone found in the human body proves effective against the invaders. To fight them, the nation forms the Other Suppression Force, whose young psionic members are known as the Scarlet Guardians. Yuito Sumeragi, a psychokinetic and the son of the nation's founder, was rescued by the force as a child. He endures its harsh training and joins to repay that debt. Kasane Randall is a prodigy recruited for her abilities, and she has begun having strange, unsettling dreams. The two newcomers meet their comrades and are drawn toward a fate neither can avoid.
