Neku Sakuraba, a fifteen-year-old with a taste for music and graffiti, wakes in the middle of Shibuya's Scramble Crossing with no memory of how he arrived. He holds a strange black pin that lets him hear the thoughts of passers-by, and he receives an undeletable message from the Reapers: complete a mission before a 60-minute timer runs out, or be erased. He has been pulled into the Underground, a plane of existence overlapping the real Shibuya, and enrolled in the Reapers' Game, a seven-day contest of daily missions. Attacked by hostile creatures called Noise, he is approached by a girl named Shiki Misaki, who proposes that they form a partnership pact to survive together.
