In a near-future Japan, humanity is menaced by the Noise, a type of disaster-class alien entity that turns people into lumps of carbon on contact and is almost immune to conventional weapons. The only effective countermeasure is the secret Symphogear System, armor that activates when a wearer sings and lets her fight the Noise. Its best-known users are Tsubasa Kazanari and Kanade Amou, the chart-topping idol duo Zwei Wing, whose double life is hidden from the public. During one of their concerts, a Noise attack leaves the cheerful girl Hibiki Tachibana gravely wounded, an event that changes her life. Two years later she enrolls at Lydian Private Music Academy, the school Tsubasa attends, together with her friend Miku Kohinata, and finds herself drawn into the fight to protect humanity.
