Set in 15th-century France during the Hundred Years' War with England, the story follows Montmorency, the son of a noble who devotes himself to magic and alchemy at the royal knight training school in Paris. There he lives a busy but fulfilling life among many knight and princess-knight candidates, including Richemont, the sister of the Duke of Brittany. His world collapses when France suffers a crushing defeat at the Battle of Agincourt and Paris falls. The school is closed, and Montmorency loses everything, becoming a wanted wandering alchemist. While fleeing, he arrives at a village and meets a mysterious young girl named Jeanne, offering an alternate take on the legend of Joan of Arc.
