Sakai Yuuji, an ordinary high school student, finds his normal life shattered when he encounters creatures from another world called "Guze no Tomogara" that feed on human life energy. He witnesses people being frozen in blue flames and devoured, and just as he is about to suffer the same fate, a mysterious girl with flaming red hair and eyes appears. Wielding a large sword, she saves him from the monster. The girl, whom Yuuji later names Shana, reveals herself to be a "Flame Haze," a warrior who hunts these beings. She then delivers a shocking truth: Yuuji is already dead, his existence devoured, and he is now merely a "Torch," a temporary substitute destined to fade away. However, Yuuji is a special Torch, a "Mystes," containing a precious item within him.
