After losing her parents as a young girl, Utena Tenjou is comforted by a traveling prince who dries her tears, urges her to keep her strength and nobility as she grows up, and leaves her a ring bearing a rose crest as a promise that they will meet again. So moved by the encounter, she resolves to become a prince herself. Years later, the spirited and athletic Utena attends the elite Ohtori Academy, where she wears her own version of the boys' uniform, frustrates her teachers, and wins admiration from classmates. Her chivalrous streak soon puts her at odds with the Student Council, including President Touga Kiryuu and Vice President Kyouichi Saionji, whose members carry rings identical to hers. Through them she encounters Anthy Himemiya, a mysterious girl known as the Rose Bride, and is drawn into a hidden world of secret duels.
