In 2024, a cataclysmic event devastates human civilization, leaving Japan in ruins and overrun by grotesque, man-eating monsters. Amidst this desolation, a young boy named Maru travels with Kiruko, an odd-job girl from Nakano, on a quest to find a mysterious place known as "Heaven." Maru believes he will find someone who looks exactly like him there. Meanwhile, within a secluded facility surrounded by high walls, children like Tokio live a sheltered existence, raised by robots in a seemingly idyllic yet enigmatic environment. They are taught that the outside world is a dangerous "hell-scape" filled with monsters.
