Set in an alternate early-twentieth-century Kyoto, where only steam power has developed and the streets are wrapped in smoke, the story follows two young people brought together by a lost notebook. Inako Momokawa is a devout 15-year-old, the second daughter of a sake brewer in Fushimi, who is scolded daily by her father and quietly nurses dreams for her future and regrets over her late mother. Kihachi Sakamoto is a distrustful, freewheeling youth who rejects the gods and talks of an coming age of electricity, having lost the older brother, Seiroku, who once shared that dream. The notebook, the "Twentieth Century Electrical Catalog," holds Kihachi's childhood predictions about electricity, and its whereabouts are unknown. The pair set out to find it.
