Utakoi is a historical romance manga that offers a "super-liberal interpretation" of the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu, an anthology of 100 romantic poems by 100 different poets. These poems are famously used as the basis for the traditional Japanese card game karuta. The series explores the human emotions embedded within these ancient poems, presenting various love stories. It begins by focusing on the romantic relationship between Fujiwara and Ariwara.
