In 2061 AD, 50 years after the advent of a Network society, humanity developed the Meta Real Network, or "the Metal," to address issues like data leaks and misinformation. The Metal provides secure virtual cyber enclaves called bubble shells for personal memory data, becoming integral to daily life. However, within this secure environment, people's unleashed instincts create a strange friction with their regulated real-world lives, leading to unimaginable aberrations. Masamichi Haru is a cyber diver, an expert who ventures into the Metal's depths to investigate these incidents that blur the lines between reality and the virtual world.
