Jubei Kibagami is a wandering, masterless swordsman in feudal Japan, known for his deadly skills. He saves Kagero, a female ninja, from a monstrous man with a stone-hard body. Kagero is the sole survivor of her ninja clan, investigating a mysterious plague that annihilated a village. Jubei initially wants to avoid involvement, but the man's allies, a group of supernaturally powered ninja known as the Devils of Kimon, force his hand. A government spy poisons Jubei, offering an antidote if he uncovers the Devils of Kimon's true intentions and their connection to the plague.
