Mai Tokiha and her sickly younger brother, Takumi, receive scholarships to the prestigious Fuuka Academy. On their way to the school, their ferry is caught in a battle between two girls with supernatural powers. Mai soon discovers that she also possesses these powers, making her a HiME (Highly-advanced Materializing Equipment). HiMEs are battle princesses who can materialize "Elements" and summon metallic guardians called "Childs." Mai joins twelve other girls at Fuuka Academy who share her fate, as they are tasked with defending the academy and the local city from mysterious creatures known as Orphans.
