Scra is the first Crow to be admitted to The Roost, the world's most prestigious military academy, though his acceptance is surrounded by conspiracy. His roommate, Ky, becomes suspicious of Scra's nightly disappearances. As Scra, Ky, and Ree navigate their studies, flight tests, and 'Murders' (presumably a term for their groups or tasks), they begin to uncover the truth about their seemingly utopian society and rumors of a superweapon known as "The Croaking."
