Jack Granger is a father whose daughter, Kitty, has not smiled since her mother's death two years prior. Kitty's homeroom teacher, Abby Walsh, frequently contacts Jack regarding Kitty's struggles at school. Initially dismissive, Jack eventually realizes the severity of the situation. He finds himself relying on Abby, despite her being the type of woman he typically dislikes due to her strict, opinionated, and overly eager demeanor. Abby, in turn, feels a strong attraction to Jack, but believes a relationship between them is impossible.
